Born in France in 1977 (after her Chilean parents escaped from the regime of Supreme Asshole Augusto Pinochet), Tijoux is South America’s hottest female solo rapper. Her 2010 U.S. debut (and second solo album), 1977, showed a decent, socially conscious rapper with a triple-stream of consciousness, a sound that borrows from Europe and the NY underground, and lyrics firmly planted in South America. Despite the glowing reviews (and a well-received SXSW appearance in 2010), in 1977 Tijoux sounds as if she is still working on her delivery and is light years away from Spain’s Mala Rodríguez’s power and precision. But in this six-song EP, recorded during NY’s Latin Alternative Music Conference last summer, Tijoux is as comfortable as ever, and her delivery in “1977” is even better (and faster) than the original. It helps if you speak Spanish, but at least in this set she talks to the audience in English. If you don’t have 1977, this is a good introduction to the live vibe of a smart artist.
