How charitable you feel towards the latest effort from Arctic Monkeys may well depend on when, not if, you became a fan of the now decade-old band. It’s definitely an improvement over the listless and blah-sounding Suck It and See, and on vampy glam-tainted rave-ups like “Arabella” and “I Want It All” they sound a lot more like the band that caught the world’s attention in 2005. But others, like the tired lead-off “Do I Wanna Know” and the dismal “No. 1 Party Anthem,” recall their latter days of wandering in the wilderness. Overall, though, it’s a strong enough effort and a step forward accompanied by a look back.
