Art Opening: Mujeres de Aztlan

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-06-09

Back in the dark ages, I walked in a bizarre fashion show David Casas organized at Centro Cultural Aztlan ? one of the more memorable perks of growing up as a teen art-slut in SA. Since then, Aztlan has also grown up and moved to the Deco Building, where they’re doing an excellent job of showing a colorful mix of local artists ? whether they’re obsessed with the legendary ancestral home of the Nahual peoples or not. Last month, Aztlan’s Superheroes exhibition featured work inspired by community role models ? all created by promising young student artists. For June, Aztlan celebrates female artists ? photographers, poets, painters, and musicians ? in an exhibition titled Las Mujeres de Aztlan. To see the names of the 40 mujeres who contributed to this exhibition ? where Sabrina Edins will provide live music during the opening reception ? simply turn to page 40.
