Those missionaries at SMART (Supporting Multiple Arts Resources Together), the innovative non-profit responsible for October’s annual SMARTFair and champions year-round of art education, throw a family-friendly, developmentally-enriching (and, yes, hugely fun) holiday bash at David Shelton Gallery (20626 Stone Oak) Saturday, December 12. From 1 to 4 p.m., the younger set (ages 4-13) are urged to create, create, create under the tutelage of some of San Anto’s most visionary artmakers; holiday ornaments, silkscreening, piñatas, and cupcakes will be among the art-tastic projects to which your tykes can turn their li’l hands (and big ol’ brains). Then from 4-7 p.m., adults are encouraged to raise their glasses of holiday cheer while checking out local contemporary art. Shelton’s one of a tiny handful of local gallerists devoted to brokering San Antonio’s burgeoning contemporary offerings to the larger world, a necessary boon to an arts community long on talent but short on gallery representation. If you’re new to art collecting or newly committed to SATX artists, you can’t go wrong at David Shelton’s North Side oasis. Also, a portion of the day’s proceeds will go toward funding other SMART activities. To RSVP for workshops, call (210) 481-5200 or e-mail by Friday, December 11. — Sarah Fisch
