Director Jonathan Pennington’s production of Grease at the Woodlawn Theater aims to “step it up” — in terms of quality and target audience. The Woodlawn’s Sherry Wehner noted that, after several kid-friendly runs, this Grease even has “cussing and making out!” The cast and costumes are adorable, but visiting Brit Claire Russell (whose credits include performing in Les Misérables in London’s West End) couldn’t be a more perfect Sandy ? accent included. Tiny mics discreetly hidden in the actors’ ’50s-era hairstyles help the dialogue sound natural and not overacted. And, yes ? I confirmed this with one of the Pink Ladies ? “almost everybody swears at some point.” $17-$25, Friday, June 18, 7:30pm, the Woodlawn Theatre, 1920 Fredericksburg, woodlawntheatre.com, continues through July 11.
