Backstage at Oz

When: Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. and July 23-29, 3 & 7 p.m. Continues through July 29 2017

The Woodlawn Pointe company has been bringing LGBT and alternative theater to San Antonio since their opening of The Golden Glee Club. Their latest production, Backstage at Oz, is a musical comedy “about the antics of a group of actors taking part in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz.” The show follows actors playing Dorothy and co. when their production of Oz is interrupted by a strike by the Munchkins, who demand “bigger pay for little people.” The play-within-a-play features characters like a Shakespearean actor who believes his role of Oz is beneath him, a drunk who plays the Cowardly Lion, and an unlikely pair playing Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch. Moreover, the beloved Scarecrow pulls out due to a straw allergy, and Dorothy follows through with the part despite her breasts being too large for the part. Written by Bernard J. Taylor, the play makes its debut in a production directed by Dave Cortez with artistic input from Greg Hinojosa.

Price: $15-$20
