Bar Food

1. The Esquire Tavern
115 E. Commerce St.
(210) 222-2521

It's not always easy to stand behind what our readers collectively elect in our Best of San Antonio poll, but top-notch bar food at the oldest watering hole on the River Walk is something we can agree on. Short of a five-year hiatus, The Esquire has been a downtown anchor since opening its doors back in 1933. Brought back to its original splendor in 2011 by architect, developer and "reluctant restaurateur" Chris Hill, the dimly lit landmark complements its famed cocktail program with a menu of thoughtfully sourced grub prepared by chef Brooke Smith (pictured) and her team. Among the treats to be had in the tavern's cozy booths and barstools are organic burgers, deviled eggs and fried apple pies. And although the masses don't arrive until happy hour or later, The Esquire beckons to those in the know with $8 lunch specials that come with ice tea but taste even better with an ice-cold beer.
