Beating Back the Claws of the Cold

Beating Back the Claws of the Cold
Composer: The Pica Beats
Label: Hardly Art
Release Date: 2008-10-01
Rated: NONE
Genre: Recording

Planting roots in Seattle by way of Vermont, the Pica Beats have bloomed into an unself-conscious four-piece from the solo-project seed of guitarist/sitarist/vocalist Ryan Barrett, melding a buffet of genres and idiosyncratic circumstances into something uniquely their own.

A wiry sitar, on-point drums, and selectively incorporated female vocals bolster the at-times heartbreaking narrative that unravels as they explore the terrifying and dysfunctional, and ultimately converge on the respite that must follow. Delicately bassy “Summer Cutting Kale” niggles the details of the song’s subject, but gives kudos for its fortitude, likening it to the resilient bark of the paper birch tree, while the title track reveals the band’s penchant for well-versed and cleverly crafted song structures. This sophomore release is sure to secure their position in the, dare I say, indie-pop realm, and is for sure a worthy listen.
