The beagle known as Katie, who inspired owner Andrea Thompson to create preservative-free, natural and small batch dog treats, passed away on Wednesday at 11 human-years-old.
Thompson first began making Katie's treats after the pup developed allergies. She launched Katie's Jar with dog-friendly empanadas, biscuits, and churros in 2011 and became a market staple with Katie making the occasional visit to the market. Thompson expanded the brand to include neckerchief and bowties and now the treats are also available for purchase at retailers such as Bakery Lorraine, Bird Bakery and Revolucion Coffee.
"I remember trying to come up with the name and everyone I asked hated it. They said it was too confusing. I'm so glad I stuck with it — they started as her treats and that's what was in her Treat jar. I think that is a big part of our story — they were created for her because I couldn't find fresh, natural, and preservative free treats," Thompson told the Current.
In a blog post this March, Thompson shared that Katie was diagnosed with renal failure and pancreatitis in February. Thompson shared the news of Katie's passing on social media.
Sharing sad news is always the hardest... On this beautiful day Katie went to sleep. I had family over all morning saying goodbye and she received a special blessing from Fr. Jim before we went to her last vet visit. Her kidneys were too damaged to go on and I made the hardest decision I've ever made. She was in so much pain and there was nothing more we could do. She was the best dog and made me a better person. (My friends will attest to that!) She was my dog biscuit muse and she will be sorely missed. Thank you for ❤️ing all of her photos. Her legacy will live on and I will never forget her sweet spirit. I'll be stocking all our wholesalers and will then take a few days off. If I see you around be warned, I will cry on you! 🐶 ❤ Andrea #katie
