The Briscoe Western Art Museum will host its third annual Yanaguana Indian Arts Market—the only one of its kind in Texas—on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2, 2016. Over 40 of the most respected Native American artists showcase and sell their handmade works of art including basketry, jewelry, carvings, beadwork, pottery, and more. Storytelling, dancing, musical performances, demonstrations—as well as Native American-inspired food—offer visitors a glimpse into tribal tradition and contemporary Native culture.

The intertribal USAPW, Inc. demonstrates and explains common pow wow dance styles: Men’s Fancy Feather, Straight, Traditional, and Grass; and Women’s Jingle, Fancy Shawl, Straight, and Southern Cloth.

Member of the Indian Arts & Craft Association (IACA)—an organization committed to promoting the integrity of materials—Hendren gives Market-goers an introduction to the turquoise gemstone. The stone is a mainstay in Indian jewelry of the Southwest and has profound meaning for the people of the region. In the raw, it is extremely rare and valuable. However, imitations and altered stones abound. Learn basics about turquoise, its different variations, and what to look (and ask for!) when buying.

Author and storyteller, Tingle performs Native American stories for all ages—drawing from a repertory of over 400 tales—with music on his cedar flute and whaleskin drum. In 2012, he was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters, an honor reserved for Texas’ most renowned authors. His books will be available for sale throughout the weekend.

The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 was a critical historical event between the Pueblo people and the Spanish Empire, but largely remains unknown. Watch and discuss the animated short documentary about the Revolt with producer, Dr. Aimee Villarreal and Archeologist, Joseph Aguilar (San Ildefonso Pueblo).
