Buffalo Soldier Day

When: Sun., Jan. 14, 12-4 p.m. 2018

After the Civil War, many African Americans enlisted in the infantry and cavalry units assigned to the Texas frontier. There, they scouted and mapped Texas lands; protected settlers, traders and the mail; installed telegraph lines; and carried out dozens of other tasks that shaped early Texas. In conjunction with DreamWeek, the ITC draws inspiration from these “Buffalo Soldiers” for a free Second Sunday program showing attendees how to pack a ruck sack for a frontier patrol, read maps, and track wild animals.
