To close out its 20th season, the Vexler is putting on a timeless classic: Cabaret. A subversive, sexy musical set in Berlin on the eve of Nazi rule, Cabaret made a huge splash when it premiered in 1966, sweeping the Tonys for that year, and has been a mainstay of both Broadway and touring productions ever since, including several award-winning revivals. The seedy Kit Kat Klub lets its clientele immerse themselves in song and dance to escape the threat of violence on the horizon, but such distractions can only go so far — interpersonal conflict becomes magnified by political tensions, fracturing relationships amongst both patrons and performers. The Vex’s production features Rick Sanchez as the flamboyant Emcee and Amanda Gordon as the Kit Kat Klub’s headliner Sally Bowles, and will be performed on a thrust stage, which allows the audience to sit on three sides of the stage, bringing them closer to the cast to allow for more — ahem — intimacy.
