Don’t be fooled by the first 10 seconds of Austin duo Butcher Bear and Charlie’s first “mini-LP.” The fuzzed-out, bass-heavy chords sound absolutely nothing like the rest of the saucy electro album. In fact, you can skip the sizzurp-leaning opener “Let Loose Rule” all together for the far more interesting “Klepto,” with singer Charlie engaging in some Peaches-inspired sexual-liberation lyrics over producer Butcher Bear’s minimal glitch beats. The catchy “Chopsticks” is the strongest single. Charlie vamps it up to Butcher Bear’s breakbeats and backing vocals. There’s a menacing edge to Butcher Bear & Charlie that keeps their electro music from being straight-up dance pop. On the title song, for instance, Charlie seduces the listener with the line “oh you are the cutest little carbomb,” delivering the line in a drawn-out, petulant cadence. Meanwhile, Butcher Bear’s production veers toward a shadowy baroque with industrial beats and synths set to “harpsichord.” It might not be “intelligent dance music,” but it’s certainly inventive. — Callie Enlow
