Uresti, the representative for Texas House District 118, filed the necessary paperwork to enter to the special election that Governor Greg Abbott called for Senate District 19 in light of Carlos Uresti's resignation. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, July 31.
"I am confident I can work with the hard-working communities across Senate District 19 to effectively represent the district's needs," Rep. Uresti said in a press release.
Tomas Uresti isn't alone in trying to fill the seat. State Rep. Roland Gutierrez and former U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego announced their intent to fill the seat almost as soon as Carlos Uresti was convicted back in February. Charlie Urbina Jones, Pete Flores, Jesse "Jay" Alaniz (who was also a longtime Harlandale trustee), Carlos Antonio Raymond and Tony Valdivia.
Whoever wins the election will complete former Senator Uresti's term, which ends in January 2021.
