If you’ve been missing Carmens de la Calle since it closed its doors at 720 E Mistletoe early this year, then you can help speed the reopening process along by donating to the joint’s recently launched Kickstarter campaign. The $55,000 fundraising goal would help cover the costs of new equipment, the addition of a new chef and more menu items at the future home of Carmens de la Calle at 320 N Flores. Paula Sullivan, AKA Carmen, says she hopes to include lunch delivery, cooking classes and a private onsite catering venue for locals and tourists alike. As of press time, the campaign had 12 backers and just under $2,000 dollars pledged.
Food & Wine has nominated The Brooklynite (516 Brooklyn, (210) 444-0707) as one of “The People’s Best New Bars: West/Southwest.” You can vote for The Brooklynite, the only San Antonio bar to make the nominee list, through September 30 and winners will be announced October 2. The competition is fierce with Austin’s Midnight Cowboy and Qui in the running along with Houston’s Julep. Get to clicking.
Earlier this year, the Institute of Texan Cultures (801 E Cesar Chavez) hosted one of the most laid-back beer events I’ve been to in years. Tapping Texan Cultures returns this Friday, September 26, 6-8 p.m. with Busted Sandal Brewing and Texas-based craft brewing companies showcasing their goods. The San Antonio Cerveceros will also be there to share all their sudsy, malty, hoppy beer knowledge. Best of all, the event is free.
You can rid yourself of that beer hangover with brunch at Cocina Heritage Restaurant (118 N Medina, (210) 267-5124) as they host a five-course nogada brunch on Saturday, September 27, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Stop in for Mexican entrees, flan and agua fresca. Tickets are available through eventbrite.com.
Oktoberfest is in full swing these days. The Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort (9800 Hyatt Resort, (210) 767-7999) will host a day of bratwurst, beers and swimming on Saturday, October 4, 4-8 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults and include food, one drink ticket, and access to the resort’s pool and waterpark from noon to 8 p.m. A cash bar will be available with more beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks. Over at Boardwalk On Bulverde (14732 Bulverde), the food truck park will host its fourth annual OctoBeer Feast from Friday, October 3 through Sunday, October 5. Check out their Facebook page for details on trucks and beers available.
