Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-05-26

If it’s a meaty plot you’re after, 1964’s Viva Las Vegas is the wrong place to look. The original trailer promises the film is the “swingin’est, singin’est, grooviest, lovin’est entertainment sensation it has ever been your luck to enjoy.” Variety commented on the film’s unique ability to “dazzle the eye, assault the ear, and ignore the brain,” while remaining “distortedly preoccupied with anatomical oomph.” In a nutshell, Elvis needs cash to repair his race car’s engine so he can compete in Las Vegas’s first-ever Grand Prix. Swimming instructress Ann-Margret distracts the King from his money-raising efforts while singing and dancing her way into his heart. Notably, Viva Las Vegas includes: gorgeous footage of the strip in its vintage neon heyday, a critically acclaimed auto race, and the only instance of Elvis performing an entire song in a single scene shot by one camera with no splices.
