Marcus Rubio & the Gospel Choir of Pillows
I think whatever The Grasshopper Lies Heavy does next will be awesome. I heard them play a couple of new songs at the 1011 a few months back and I thought they were super, super rad.
I’m really excited for Jasper’s Cast’s new record. It’s definitely pushing the boundaries of what folk and bluegrass can be. I think it’s going to sound like some A Ghost is Born-type shit — except much more acoustic.
Indie River Radio is a very unique idea that has a lot of potential. I also think Boneshakers is doing a lot of things right so far, and as they grow and get more influential, I think that club is going to take off.
Girl in a Coma
Hacienda, Piñata Protest, Pop Pistol, and Education are the bands we always seem to catch when in town, but there are sooo many! It’s a good time for live music in SA!
Juanito Castillo, as an heir to the Esteban Jordan progressive style, will definitely be one to look at. Piñata Protest has broken some interesting ground that fuses conjunto with punk and a rowdy, seemingly more socially and politically conscious style and songs. Accordionist Sunny Sauceda is able to cross genres, fusing Tejano/conjunto with rock.
