Founded in the early 1980s by brothers Custo and David Dalmau in Barcelona Spain, Custo Barcelona was inspired by the bold graphics and intense colors and patterns of California surf-punk fashion. Twenty years later, the collection includes both a men’s and women’s line and is sold in 36 freestanding shops worldwide — the San Antonio location is only the 10th in the U.S. — as well as in department and specialty stores in over 30 countries. Retail Director Tony Brand says Custo chose San Antonio for our charm and cultural diversity, plus the city’s demographics are a good fit to grow the brand in the Southern U.S.
Will this Spanish post-surf style play in SA? My sneak peek at the fall collection reveals muted, vintage-look plaids for both sexes, offset with sparkly, happy-making metallics in the women’s line, color-blocked knits and a lot of graphic prints for both men and women. Quirky, daring, but really wearable. The Custo Barcelona look I’ll be taking home? A structured, textured coat in a popping fluorescent and black print over a slinky, ethereal silver and bronze mini dress. •
