Walking up the stairs to jewelry designer Carroll Dorsey Walker’s second-floor boutique, I wondered why a young woman sat at a desk in the front window. It turns out the newly opened shop, Bejewel (located on 4901 Broadway, suite 221, above Mon’s Thai) is also Walker’s creative studio and office, where merchandise, supplies, and paperwork comingle. “I’ve always wanted to work directly with the customer in an environment that blends the artistic process with retail availability,” says Walker.
Walker has been designing jewelry for a decade, working her way from house parties to showrooms in New York and Los Angeles. Bejewel is a haven of well-displayed necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings, including Walker’s new fall line. “Beads are really coming back,” says Walker. “Chains are still popular, but I think we’ll see them get shorter.” She also favors red coral against fall’s gray clothing palette and animal “prints” like tortoise shell.
Walker also customizes gorgeous journals and magnets with miniature Swarovski crystals. A line of hand-poured soy candles are accessorized with glam chunks of onyx, quartz, and mother of pearl. What went home with me? A whimsical stapler shaped like a silvery fish, emblazoned — of course — with purple crystals.
