In the smoldering intensity of our Texas summer, I often find it difficult to resist a cold, calorie-ridden sweet treat, which inevitably doesn’t sit well with my food conscience afterward. Fortunately for me (and for you eco-friendly health nuts), San Antonio has an OrangeCup frozen yogurt shop.
Visible from the parking lot of La Cantera’s newest wing, OrangeCup invites curiosity with its chic design. Appropriately enough, the doors are bright orange, and inside, the dominant white hues contribute to a sense of impeccability. From the pearl-white floor to the matching white tables and chairs, I immediately wondered how they keep things so clean. Hints of blue, orange, and green accentuate the design.
Frozen yogurt has a sorbet-like consistency that tastes and feels lighter than ice cream, making it ideal for a summer cool-down, and it’s swimsuit-friendly: 100-percent non-fat and high in fiber, vitamin C, and calcium.
At the front of the line, I sampled the three flavors on tap: natural, züm, and acai berry. “Natural,” the simplest of the three, left a pleasant yet tangy taste, while the züm, an orange-based flavor, and the acai berry, a blackberry and pomegranate blend, were sweeter. Like Texas ice-cream chain Amy’s, OrangeCup offers an array of toppings, from fruity to crunchy — 16 in all. The selection is almost overwhelming, but I ordered strawberries and granola on a midsize natural cup (you can add as many toppings as you like, for a price), making for a perfect balance of crunchy, tangy, and sweet.
With a focus on reducing energy consumption, OrangeCup serves its yogurt in recyclable and reusable plastic cups. And, best of all, nutrition labels are affixed to the cups. I was very content with my 186-calorie count, and with prices comparable to that of a trip to the ice-cream parlor, OrangeCup is a great way to beat the heat.
