Release Date: 2010-05-05

Dayton Contemporary Dance Company’s performance this Friday is sure to be one of the major highlights of SA’s Dance Month. The internationally renowned company (which is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary) boasts the world’s largest collection of classic works by African American choreographers. Possibly one of the more arresting works in DCDC’s catalog is Talley Beatty’s 1947 3-piece suite “Southern Landscape,” which includes the mesmerizing “Mourner’s Bench.” Steeped in the history, the suite is based on Howard Fast’s book Freedom Road, and interprets stories such as a Ku Klux Klan attack on an integrated rural farming community in the South. $31, 8pm, The Carver’s Jo Long Theatre, 226 N. Hackberry, (210) 207-7211, thecarver.org, dcdc.org, ticketmaster.com.
