Now, of course, we all know it was none other than actress Ellen Page, who took Cruz to task for his stance on LGBT rights and persecution of LGBT community members across the world.
Not surprisingly, there wasn't much for the two unlikely buddies to agree on, though they did seem to concur on whether the Obama administration is doing enough on the issue in high-conflict zones like Iran.
In any case, following the brief but engaging encounter, Cruz said that people like Page are essentially advocating for reverse persecution – of those just trying to stand up to their constitutionally-protected right to exercise their faith and religion.
Cruz told conservative news outlet Newsmax that somebody's gotta back these good Americans who apparently need to be a protected class of their own, in need of protection from dangerous, diehard liberals in Hollywood – such as Page.

Cruz cited a couple who were forced to close their business because they refused to become part of today's LGBT-tolerant society.
"An awful lot of folks in the media, an awful lot of folks in Hollywood, they dismiss the assault on religious liberty," Cruz said. "They say it isn't real."
But what about the assault – physical and otherwise – that LBGT members suffered for years just because of their sexual orientation? What's that, Ted?
