Decades after the first Earth Day thrust the environment into the minds of most Americans, the green movement has gained momentum, and with a combination of smart design and conscious market-based efforts, eco-friendly businesses may have finally found their place in the world.
These days, people are looking for more eco-friendly practices in their lives — from buying organic foods to skin products, hybrid cars, and even furniture.
Enter Motif Modern Living, designers of contemporary furniture, lighting, and accessories, who integrate modern form, function, and eco-friendliness, making the seemingly impossible task of integrating great design and green design possible. With close attention paid to not harming the environment, Motif is embracing sustainability in their business practices and modernism in their furniture design as a way to appeal to the environmentally concerned American.
The ambience of Motif’s showroom demonstrates the company’s attention to detail with elevated ceilings, rows of windows, and transparent water walls — it feels like you’re surrounded by nature.
“We believe that modern living doesn’t have to be cold — we imagine a modern world in harmony with nature,” says Pamela Hastings, marketing manager for Motif.
In addition to using natural elements in their showrooms, Motif also uses energy-efficient fluorescent lighting, which switches off automatically when nobody is in the room. The heavily environmental agenda of Motif’s galleries is also reflected in their choice of clean, contemporary furniture. It conveys a good dose of urban sensibility with sophistication and Modernist notions without being pretentious or complicated. Pieces like the Nagoya cocktail table, with its contemporary Japanese feel, and the Bali bar constructed from hardwoods with hand-carved accents add balance and harmony to any room.
“Our signature is an organic contemporary look,” Hastings said. “We are passionate about design, but equally passionate about bringing a space to life — the result is a soothing, modern experience.” In addition to creating an environmentally friendly showroom filled with aesthetically pleasing furniture, Motif’s Webby Award-winning website does its part by providing a functional shopping experience nationwide. Motif uses recycled pallets, boxes, and packaging materials as part of its corporate goal to minimize their footprint on the planet. Also, a monthly stipend is paid to employees who choose to drive a hybrid vehicle — now, that’s dedication to the environment.
In 2008, Motif received the ARTS Award for their commitment to excellence in their merchandise and businesses practices. Chosen by the national merchandising organization Accessories Resource Team, the ARTS Awards are the premier honors program for the decorative-accessories industry and recognizes excellence from retailers, manufacturers, sales representatives, and designers in every region of the United States.
“Our team is conscientious — it really is part of the culture at Motif,” Hastings said. “We believe in doing our part.” •
