When: Fri., Dec. 9, 8 p.m. 2016
Five-time Grammy winner Dianne Reeves achieved the impossible: She made us like a Christmas album. Christmas Time Is Here (2004), which is the basis of her concert at the Carver, is the perfect vehicle to please everyone from jazz die-hard fans of her amazing tone, improv abilities and skillful scat singing, to simple folks who dig things like “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” All of these holiday classics were reinvented and appropriated by Reeves, who made them her own without losing their essence. Reeves is a consummate performer and one of the few jazz/R&B figures who’s accessible without sacrificing any musical or vocal mastery. We only hope she’ll also sing some of her earlier material (or at least some from Beautiful Life, her 2015 Grammy-winning Best Jazz Vocal Album, a masterpiece of pop, R&B and Latin sounds). But, even if she doesn’t, we’re in.
