Texans drink Dr Pepper like no one's business, but should it be the Lone Star State's official soft drink?

Officials behind the sweet soda certainly think so and have created a Change.org petition to get Texans' love of Dr Pepper in writing.

"Like any Texan, Dr Pepper has only the deepest pride and appreciation for its home state," reads the petition. "Dr Pepper has a rich, storied history in the great state of Texas and being named its official soft drink would mark a milestone for the beloved brand to celebrate for generations to come."

At publication time, the petition is just a few hundred signatures shy of its 10,000-signature goal. That should come as no surprise given Dr Pepper's starring role in numerous very Texan memes.

So how did Dr Pepper gain the reputation of being Texan as heck? The soda originated in Waco, first made by a pharmacist named Charles Alderton in 1885. It's considered one of the oldest soda brands.

As part of the petition drive, Dr Pepper announced the release of 15 special edition labels that will only be available in Texas. The collection will showcase artwork of the Lone Star State's iconic landmarks and landscapes.
