For the past two years, Austin pianist and singer Emily Gimble has helped the harmonies in Asleep at the Wheel pop with energy. But, in March, she announced she’d be leaving Ray Benson and the country legends to give it a run on her own. Her debut Certain Kinda shows a solid footing upon the departure, with 10 cuts of Southern soul and pop in the Norah Jones mold. With a drummer embedded in the pocket and a bedding of crackling stage organ, Gimble’s voice shines as she considers life and loss in Texas. Her grandfather, the fidler and Western Swing legend Johnny Gimble, would surely be proud.
