Joni Mitchell has described herself as “a painter who writes music,” one who “sings her sorrow and paints her joy.” Mitchell’s lyrics use metaphor to construct elaborate visual narratives that resonate with narrative approaches of photographers featured in the exhibition Telling Tales: Contemporary Narrative Photography. Tom Gerry has written about Joni Mitchell’s paintings and lyrics, and he speaks about the iconic musician/poet. Gerry is professor of English at Laurentian University, Ontario, Canada. His research interests include Canadian literature and text/image studies.
