- Café Green Tea serves up Japanese-influenced lunch fare in the Medical center area. The brown rice burger (with chicken or veggies) is a must-have.
Green tea has become synonymous with health in the United States. It conjures up images of meditative silences and well-worn handless teacups. It brings to mind foods that may not taste great, but are certainly good for you in some way. Café Green Tea has some foods that are certainly good for you, and some that are tasty, but these aren't always one and the same.
The toasted sandwiches (ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, grilled cheese) are all standard fare. With lots of gooey cheese and grease on the outside, these probably are not on the healthy side. The miso soup is fine as a palate cleanser to prepare for your meal, but as a separate side it's lacking in depth. The desserts rotate out often, but sweet constant is the matcha green tea cake. It's served roulade style, green spongy cake curled around thick cream. The cake itself has little flavor and is a bit too dense.
The dish they're most proud of (and rightfully so) is the brown rice burger. The chicken burger is suffused with teriyaki sauce, with cheese and greens on top. The bun is brown rice, shaped into a patty and fried. It's a messy, greasy burger, the kind that requires a wet wipe, but it is satisfying and tasty. The vegetarian version swaps out the chicken for more greens and avocado. The brown rice buns are the star, though, and are probably crazy-high in calories. Luckily, the veggie fry and edamame sides are here to balance out all that fried rice.
Service can be excruciatingly slow, even during down times, so it's not the best place for a quick bite. But if you're getting the brown rice burger, settle in for something special.
