As a frequent and faithful consumer of a wide range of breadstuffs, The Little Aussie Bakery & Café piqued my interest at the door. A sign asked me to please refrain from entering with any gluten products. This is serious stuff. I emptied my pockets of bâtard crumbs and seitan dribbles that I carry around out of habit and proceeded inside the homey and comfortable café.
Established in the fall of 2006 by Australian nurse and mother of five Rita Sturzbecher and her husband John Apostolovi, The Little Aussie Bakery & Café lives up to its mission of delivering “All Taste, No Gluten!” through its well-rounded and totally gluten-free menu, offering everything from breads, pasta, and pizza to waffles, pies, and fantastic cookies of all kinds.
The fare of The Little Aussie needs no qualifier; it’s not “good for gluten-free food,” it’s just plain good. From the start of my meal, the cornbread and dinner rolls impressed me with how much they taste like their gluten-rich counterparts. The cornbread is indistinguishable (though many cornbreads are normally gluten free) and the rolls, which do have a slightly spongy texture when one first tears off a bite, successfully avoid the lack-of-fluffiness problem (that’s a technical term, btw) common to non-gluten breads.
My usual search for the strangest menu item lead me to one of the newest additions to the menu as well: a Seafood Pizza. The Little Aussie serves a thick but perfectly toasted crust piled high with pizza sauce, cheese, shrimp, calamari, and mussels. The mussels, an admittedly unusual topping, were my favorite addition to the pizza. Another delicious choice is the Pasta Bake, a hearty entrée consisting of elbow noodles layered with spinach in a roasted red pepper and tomato sauce, topped with cheese and cilantro pesto. The sweet and tart green dressing that tops the accompanying side salad deserves its own recognition, too.
While no dietary restrictions led me to the Little Aussie, the food quality and menu diversity will see me back. The innovative additions of the Seafood Pizza and a Spinach Alfredo Pizza, along with other tasty options like the Lamb Big Bloke Sandwich, the Pie of the Day (beef, chicken, or veggie pot pie), and the lemon iced cookies give The Little Aussie’s menu just what it needs to appeal to friend and foe of gluten alike.
