- Matthew Hileman, a transgender man, filed the first complaint under the amended city non-discrimination ordinance against his employer AT&T.
The first person to file a complaint under San Antonio's amended non-discrimination ordinance settled with AT&T over discrimination complaints, Out In SA reported.
Matthew Hileman, a transgender man, filed his complaint in January 2014, alleging he was unjustly fired from AT&T after he reported a hostile work environment.
Hileman's lawyer, Justin Nichols, wouldn't tell Out In SA the terms of the settlement, but he did provide harsh criticism of the city's NDO and of Mayor Ivy Taylor:
“The NDO is broken and does not offer any protection for contract employees,” Nichols said. He added that Mayor Ivy Taylor’s office showed no interest in helping Hileman work through his claim.
“I don’t mean to diminish the efforts of those who passed the NDO,” says Nichols. “It was a valiant and important effort. What I want to convey is the NDO needs fixing, and under the current mayoral administration, there is no effort to improve and implement the NDO, rendering it wholly ineffective.”
Hileman alleged that employees at AT&T threatened violence against transgendered persons and he reported finding a sign that said "no fags" on his desk.
