The Mattress Factory is the culmination of a 4-year-old dream. After learning through a friend that the space — formerly home to the Red Room — was available, the 31-year-old Trimm netted some financial support from her brother. “He said, if you really want to do it I’ll put up the money for the first three months and then you’re on your own,” she says.
The large red brick building on South St. Mary’s is unassuming, but inside, hip furniture and colorful artwork decorate a vibrant space where the creativity is palpable. The support of family and friends has been instrumental. Thanks to her father and friends, a second music stage is in the works, and this summer Trimm is adding Independent Lens film events and workshops for children to the venue’s schedule.
“I noticed in San Antonio that there aren’t many places where you can take your kids,” says Trimm. “I want to have all-day events where they can be involved as well. I want to bring in bands that everyone can enjoy.”
“Contemporary Art Month at the Mattress Factory” on July 21 will give newcomers a taste of Trimm’s knack for blending creative outlets: A group art show featuring nine artists and live music by Paperwork, Sean McCarrey, and Buttercup.
“The payoff is all in the outcome and the feeling of community,” Trimm says, taking the last couple of sips of her chai tea. It’s 11 p.m. and she is still working, heading to a meeting with a band.
“What I’m doing now is the stem of the evolution. I’m doing the back-end work, the cleaning, the booking … everything. I’m finding that it isn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be, but it feels so good to work so hard and know that it’s for a reason. I’m enjoying it all.”
