Cheese for cake

With crafts, live music, and dance performances, the Texas Folklife Festival, Institute of Texan Cultures in HemisFair Park, offers authentic cuisine from more than 40 ethnic groups, from Filipino lumpia to El Salvadoran pupusas and Turkish coffee to Alsatian sausage and Italian cheesecake. The festival is open 5-11 p.m. June 9, 5-11 p.m. June 10, noon-11 p.m. June 11, and noon-9 p.m. June 12. Admission is $10 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-12, and free for children under 6. Water for chocolate

Laura Esquivel will present her best-selling book Like Water for Chocolate and Other Delicacies as part of the "La Palabra Tiene la Palabra/ The Word Has the Word: Conversations with Mexican Authors at St. Mary's" series on June 10 at 2:30 p.m., St. Mary's University, One Camino Santa Maria. Set primarily in a kitchen, Like Water for Chocolate intertwines recipes, such as quail in rose-petal sauce and northern-style chorizo, with the stories of six opinionated women on the U.S.-Mexico border during the late 19th century. The author will also speak at the Instituto de México, 600 Hemisfair Park, June 10 at 7 p.m. in a lecture titled Entorno al Feugo or Food & Cuisine. For information, call 227-0123.

Coal for bread

The Village of Bulverde Market Days, 2295 Bulverde Road, offers organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed beef, and hormone-free chicken Saturdays from 3-6 p.m. Market days also feature homeade quilts and fresh-baked bread made on-site in large cast-iron kettles packed in coal.
