Update on Wednesday, August 10 at 6:39 p.m.: Per owner Stephanie McMillan, Gallo Pizzeria will remain open for a few more weeks through early September when they'll host a farewell party. We'll keep you posted on a date for the last pizza bash.

Sad news, pizza lovers. Gallo Pizzeria (164 Castroville Road, 210-264-0077) will close its doors on Wednesday, August 10. The shop announced its closing early Tuesday morning via Facebook.

The West Side shop which opened in 2011 is known among other things for it's insanely hot ghost pepper pie, and it's funky topping art. In 2011, critic Ron Bechtol was able to handle the heat. Here's what he had to say

Here's my take: the ghost chile is the piccolo over the bassoon of bready crust and melty cheese, and, yes, it's picoso. But I didn't really notice the Diablo sauce — or the other chiles, for that matter — and finished all 16 square inches without embarrassing myself.
Owners Stephanie and Jeremiah McMillan announced they'll open for carry out service-only on Wednesday.
