Get Reel Film Series: Works by Lawrence Andrews and Kalup Linzy

comment
Release Date: 2009-12-16

Brooklyn-based video artist and Guggenheim fellow Kalup Linzy has generated serious buzz with his brilliant soap-opera satires. A delightful surprise for those with a sharp sense of humor, “All My Churen” (left) is a keyhole view into the world of Nucuavia, a woman whose boyfriend Jojo has been killed in a drive-by shooting. Through gender-bending costuming and high-camp role-playing, Linzy portrays almost the entire cast in these mini-sagas that brilliantly meld fine art and dark comedy. Tackling racial stereotypes from a different angle, Lawrence Andrews’s short “they came riding into town on BLACK & SILVER HORSES” illustrates media’s role in the public’s perception of truth. (Not being shown, but highly recommended, “Sampled and Left Ova,” Linzy’s much hyped collaboration with fashion design team Proenza Schouler, the actress Chloë Sevigny, and Ethiopian supermodel/goodwill ambassador Liya Kebede, can be viewed at kaluplinzy.net.) $5, 6:30pm, Chiego Lecture Hall, The McNay, 6000 North New Braunfels, mcnayart.org, contains adult subject matter.
