- The French Connection — sweet potato fries topped with cinnamon, ice cream, chocolate drizzle
San Antonio will be the first franchise location of #getfried Fry Cafe, a Buffalo, New York-based eatery that specializes in offering a variety of taters topped with more your choice of more than 20 sauces, seasonings and toppings. Fry choices include hand-cut thin fries, coated straight cut fries, seasoned waffle fries, curly fries and sweet potato fries — which is basically the best menu I've seen in a long time.
We emailed with Texas native Craig Christopher, who's bringing the franchise to Texas within the next few months — first in truck form and two brick-and-mortar locations in 2017 — about what San Antonians can expect from #getfried Fry Cafe.
1. Why San Antonio? Where are the two permanent locations opening or are you still shopping for spaces?
Besides being a San Antonio native, I can’t think of a better market in Texas to introduce the #getfried Fry Café brand. San Antonio is a large city that offers a diverse culture, tourist attractions, military presence, and a well-known passion for “fiestas.” That makes it a great fit for our unique brand, and the natural choice to bring our unique concept to the masses.
We plan to kick it off later this summer with a food truck, which gives us the flexibility to quickly get the brand up and running in key, strategic places throughout south Texas. The other two store types will be a kiosk (500 square-feet to 700 square-feet) that is ideal in shopping malls, airports, food courts, casinos, sports venues and the like and a more formal brick-and-mortar model with a dining area and drive-thru option ranging in size from 1000 square-feet to 2000 square-feet. Our second store will be the brick-and-mortar larger unit that will serve as the “Texas Flagship” location of the #getfried brand and allow customers and prospective franchisees the opportunity to enjoy and discover our dining experience.
2. Are you expanding into the rest of Texas as well?
Our development group has committed to a three store multi-unit franchise agreement in a territory that includes San Antonio and the surrounding counties. Our main objective and ultimate goal is to have a #getfried Fry Café in every major town and city in Texas. I am also a #getfried Fry Café franchise sales broker in the state of Texas, with the ultimate goal of becoming the Texas master franchisee. There are currently opportunities available state-wide for prospective franchise owners and area developers
3. Was Chris Covelli, the founder, looking to franchise or did you have to convince him?
The founders of #getfried, Chris Covelli and Garrett Green, opened their first store in February of 2015 in the Walden Galleria in Buffalo, New York and began offering franchise opportunities in January of this year. They have a global vision for the future of #getfried Fry Café. I am excited to be involved in the early development stages and just blessed to be part of their team.
4. What are your favorite combinations of topped French fries?
If I had to select my top three, I would say the “716” — shredded chicken, buffalo sauce and blue cheese; the “Rocky Balboa” (Philly cheesesteak) — sirloin, sautéed onions, sweet peppers, & melted cheese; and the “Sweet Tooth” — sweet potato fries, drizzled maple syrup, powdered sugar and cinnamon. We also offer other fried favorites that are just as original, like pizza logs and buffalo chicken crunch rolls.
5. When did you first try the product?
As part of the due diligence process and research, I attended a “Discovery Day” — an important event in the franchise industry selection process and pivotal phase for a prospective franchisee to confirm they want to pursue the business venture. Over Memorial Day weekend I met with the founders and they gave me a comprehensive tour of their two stores, treated me to a tasting of all menu offerings, and met with their team. The food was delicious, and their franchise development team clearly had the experience to make their vision into a real player in the competitive fast casual food industry. My discovery day sealed the deal — within less than two weeks, I joined the #getfried Fry Café team.
