'Girls with Cameras' opens Feb 15 at Gevers Street Art Studio

With the On & Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour opening Friday, this is a big week for annual art shows in the neighborhoods. Here is another exhibit to check out, opening Tuesday, Feb 15.

Girls with Cameras puts the spotlight on the younger set—young women ages 9-14—whose photographs will be on view at Gevers Street Art Studio Feb 15 - March 15 .

Presented by Martinez Street Women’s Center, the annual photography exhibit is part of the Center’s Studio4FM afterschool program. Working with a professional photographer, the girls are given cameras and some guidance on the road to community documentary work.

“The girls went through several workshops with a female photographer and then took photographs of family traditions, holidays and even the Martin Luther King Jr. Day March,” said Joleen Garcia, executive director of the Center. “Overall, the girls learned a great skill, but most importantly they learned about the beauty of their community and the value of family,” said Garcia. “These are important components of the healthy identity that we aim to strengthen as part of our programming.”

Girls with Cameras exhibit runs February 15 – March 15 at Gevers Street Art Studio, 718 S. Gevers, San Antonio. The studio is open 9-5 Monday through Friday.
