H-E-B Moves to Sell Only Cage-free Eggs by 2025

Grocery giant H-E-B announced today that by 2025, all of its eggs will be cage-free, "provided we have adequate supply, sufficient consumer demand and pricing is affordable for our customers."

Most egg-laying hens in the U.S. live in small cages which allow for very little movement, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Although uncaged chickens sometimes live out their lives entirely indoors, their living conditions are generally better than their caged counterparts.

Animal rights groups have long pushed for grocery stores to only sell eggs from uncaged chickens. Stores such as Walmart and Kroger's have also committed to making the switch. 

Eggs from uncaged chickens can be more expensive than alternatives. H-E-B sells cage-free eggs for $3.17 per dozen, pasture-raised eggs for $6.10, and a dozen regular eggs for $2.27, according to its website.
