“To achieve harmony in bad taste is the height of elegance.” Deerhunter channels subversive French playwright Jean Genet on its latest album Halcyon Digest, a collection of faux-memories and lavish desperation. The fourth effort by the Atlanta, GA, foursome, including Atlas Sound’s Bradford Cox, dives into a cohesive harmonic journey of reflection and lament layered over indie pop melodies. “Earthquake” jolts listeners into a slow daydream of longing and memory. “Do you recall waking up …” and “Sailing” leave them helpless and floating in the isolated depths of echoing guitar and Cox’s despondent lyrics, “Only fear can make you lonely out here.” On a side note, Deerhunter’s halcyondigest.com website includes an intriguing article about the subject of catchy psychedelic-sounding “Helicopter,” a lowly Russian escort named Dima. In its entirety, the album has the depth of a lemon-drop candy, the sugar-sweet melodies mask a tart lyrical core, leaving a surprisingly elegant finish.
