Hasan Minhaj

When: Sat., Oct. 1, 8 p.m. 2016

As a senior correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Hasan Minhaj applies his skills as a stand-up comic to serious current events like the North Dakota pipeline protests, to name one recent example — often coaxing cathartic laughs from frustrating injustices and the incompetence of elected officials. He made headlines in June for doing just that as the host of the annual Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner, which took place just days after the mass shooting in Orlando, taking the opportunity to criticize the members of congress in attendance for not enacting tougher gun-control legislation. Little wonder, then, that Minhaj is also capable in finding the laughs in his personal history. His one-man stage show Homecoming King recalls the racism Minhaj — whose parents are Muslims who immigrated from India before he was born — faced growing up in California but does so with the combination of humor and grace you might expect from a recurring guest star on MTV’s Disaster Date who’s also teamed up with a religious scholar to pen an open letter to Muslims encouraging them to support gay marriage. Belly laughs originating from the head and heart.
