Once again riding shotgun with Serrano is artist Arturo Torres, who blessed the first issue of Basketball (And Other Things) with some sick images of Oklahoma City Thunder point-God Russell Westbrook. The San Antonio Current caught up with Serrano, via telephone from Houston, to discuss his weekly newsletter, the Spurs and Kawhi Leonard erotic fan fiction.
What was the inspiration for the newsletter?
Basketball is my favorite thing next to rap music so I like to write about it. Sometimes some of the stuff I want to write is a little too silly for some places, so I just wanted to do a thing where I wasn’t beholden to anyone. Where I didn’t have to answer to anyone.
You’re close to 10,000 subscribers now. How do you feel about the reaction?
I didn’t figure it was gonna get that many that quick. That’s not a super whole bunch. The way Mailchimp is set up, they have one service where it’s free up to 2,000 subscribers. That’s the one I signed up for because I figured we’d start up slow and hopefully build up a following as we got going and people would see that it’s cool or whatever. I posted the link to sign up and by the next day we were somewhere around 4,000 or 5,000. So after that you got to pay for that shit, so I was like “Ugh that sucks.”
What should subscribers expect?
It’s the kind of stuff that happens when you’re hanging out with your buddies and you’re talking about basketball. It’s not super serious. It’s just argumentative stuff. It’s just goofy things. The illustrations are a big part of what makes it cool. Arturo does a great job with that. I think once we get three or four of them into it, I’ll have a good sense of what they’re going to look like, but right now, I don’t know man. It’s gonna be weird, dumb stuff. It will probably be new stuff. I don’t want to just keep doing old stuff that people have seen before.
How does this feed into the basketball book you and Arturo are working on?
I think this is sort of a way to help with that, because for me the best way to come up with stuff that I like to write is just write other things. So that’s sort of what this helps with. It’s kind of like a brainstorming session and it’s a way for me to test out some stuff. Nothing that’s in the newsletter will be in the book but it’s a good way for me to try new things or see if certain ideas work, and then I can format or adjust it in certain ways.
With the first issue focusing on Russell Westbrook, do you have any thoughts on the Thunder? Are the Spurs past them?
I’m more nervous about playing them than playing the Warriors, just because we’ve played them so many times. They’ve shown that they can beat us. I don’t think we’re past the Thunder as long as they have Westbrook and Durant. We only have one Kawhi. Danny Green is fantastic as far as defending, but Westbrook is too fast for him and Durant is too big for him. Kawhi can only do so much.
What type of Spurs content can we expect in future issues?
I’m gonna do Kawhi Leonard erotic fan fiction. Everybody thinks I’m joking about that one, but I swear to God, I’m gonna do it.
