Industry News: Hot Joy finds a home, Stella's got you covered for lunch, Kimura opens its doors

Lots of new things going on with The Monterey (1127 S St. Mary’s) gang: Hot Joy–the Monterey’s Asian pop-up on nights they’re closed–is getting a permanent location. Owner Chad Carey says they’ve signed a lease at the old China Latina (1014 S Alamo) location. The building has sat empty for a few years now. Hot Joy will be serving on Sunday and Monday nights at The Monterey until August 12, and the permanent location will open sometime in the fall. So if you’re craving Hot Joy (or you still haven’t made it there yet), go NOW.

Carey also talked a bit about the new pizza place Barbaro on McCullough. It’ll be opening around the second week in August, and will be “less food dork-centric and [more] just smartly conceived food,” according to Carey. Pizzas will be a hybrid of Neopolitan and New York style, with the folks at Bakery Lorraine (511 E Grayson) lending their pastry expertise for the dough. Barbaro will have a website and social media presence soon, but you can check The Monterey’s Facebook and Twitter pages for news and announcements on Barbaro until then.

Stella Public House (1414 S Alamo) in the Blue Star Arts Complex is now open for lunch. The “farm-to-pizza” restaurant, which pulls in tons of local produce and meats and makes mozzarella in-house, opened earlier this year next to sister café Halcyon. Lunch starts at 11 a.m. We recommend the fennel sausage pizza and mushroom mac ‘n’ cheese. They also have a great rotation of craft beers, if you’re looking for a really happy lunch.

In case you missed the preview on our blog, San Antonio opened its first ramen joint Kimura (152 E Pecan, Suite 102) this week. Sure, other places offer the dish, but we haven’t had a dedicated ramen restaurant until now. Michael Sohocki, chef/owner at Restaurant Gwendolyn, opened Kimura this week, next door to Gwendolyn. Some will remember that this is where the first Sandbar was located. If Sohocki shows the same dedication as he does at Gwendolyn, there’s no doubt Kimura will be a hit.

Editor's note: The restaurant is taking a wee break while the staff fixes a few kinks and tweaks the menu, but it will reopen Monday, Aug. 5.

Silo (434 N Loop 1604 W) is offering a pretty sweet deal through August 10: Buy a bottle of wine, get a three-course menu for $40 per person. Reservations are required (call (210) 483-8989) and there’s a minimum of two people to get the offer.

Groomer’s Seafood (9801 McCullough) is crazy for lobster. The fish market will hold the second annual Lobster-Mania August 1-3. Groomer’s already offers deals on quality seafood, but they’re lowering the lobster prices even more, depending on their fans. The more people like their Facebook page, the lower the lobster prices get. The cutoff for new likes was Monday, with prices at $6.95 per pound for lobster.
