Kimura (152 E Pecan) is open again. What’s that? You thought they were open already? Well, the ramen shop did open last Monday, but enthusiastic crowds overwhelmed the staff. They made the decision to close the restaurant to sort out some issues and reopened on Monday, August 5. It’s open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. Call them at (210) 444-0702 and see if they’re busy before you make that trek downtown.
There’s a new beer garden in Boerne that’s been popping up on my radar lately. Random (11 Upper Cibolo Creek Road, Boerne) is open Thursday and Friday nights and during the weekend. In addition to serving beer and wine, a number of food trucks have put Random in their rotation. M.A.R.S. Mobile Kitchen, Sofrito, and Kona Ice have been serving the garden crowds recently.
Looks like that shipping container idea is paying off for The Luxury (103 E Jones). The restaurant made it on Huffington Post’s Roadtrippers blog in a post about America’s Best Offbeat Restaurants. The article cites the shipping container as a hot trend for restaurateurs concerned with durability and convenience.
NAO (312 Pearl Pkwy) is doing its summer Fire & Ice specials. On Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can get pork tacos and beer for $5. Sounds like the perfect way to finish a farmer’s market trip if you ask me. If you haven’t made it to NAO yet for their happy hour, why the hell not? They’re serving some of the best cocktails in town. Plus, you can get some discounted happy hour bites at the bar.
La Fogata (2427 Vance Jackson) is continuing their tequila tastings this summer with Patron Tequila on Friday, August 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. A tequila tasting table on the main patio will be loaded with Patron Blanco, Reposado and Añejo. Even though National Tequila Day was last month, that doesn’t mean you can’t drink straight tequila every other day.
And now, a plea: When I dine out with friends, we tend to share appetizers or desserts that have several items, like dumplings or éclairs. We usually ask how many come to a dish, and sometimes ask to be served an extra item if we have more people than food. It would be great if servers and chefs took the extra step to ask if we wanted to order an extra scallop for the plate before we even asked. I’m more than happy to pay for that extra item—but I’d love it if the restaurant took the step to ask me about it first. It’s a small quibble, but since small plates are par for the course, and I love sharing and tasting all the food, it’s something I run into a lot. Restaurants, it’s one more thing for you to do, but you might find yourself getting more money from your patrons as a result.
