On their latest album, Seattle’s sludgy noise-core veterans Akimbo stay true to the color of ’90s stoner metal while incorporating D.C. post-hardcore’s finest shining moments. Sweeping instrumentations lash out at you and quickly retract, only to attack again on a different front.

The trio weaves bluesy segments into their solid rock riffs, creating hot desert metal that would make Kyuss proud. But the band is clearly creating its own sound, abrasive and at times intentionally divergent. The incremental guitar opening on “Matawan” explodes into a melodious convergence with Weisnewski’s burly bellow, while the 11-minute “Lester Stillwell” moves in like a dark cloud mass, pairing ominous guitar effects with Damm’s cruel drums. The stygian aural environs found on Jersey Shores are foreboding and eerie, but provide the perfect habitat for Weisnewski’s gruff vocals, resulting in a scary-good album.
