Jesus Christ Superstar

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-03-30

In another brave undertaking, the Woodlawn Theatre resurrects Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s epochal rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. Stepping into the weathered sandals is the theater’s executive artistic director, Jonathan Pennington, who not long ago was strutting the same stage in fishnets and heels as The Rocky Horror Show’s sweet transvestite, Dr. Frank N. Furter. Once banned by the BBC on grounds of being sacrilegious, Jesus Christ Superstar originated as concept album (with Deep Purple — and later Black Sabbath — lead singer Ian Gillan as the voice of Jesus) that focused on the last week of Jesus’ life and presented him as a celebrity icon. $22 ($15 for children under 12), 7:30pm Fri, Apr 1; 7:30pm Sat, Apr 2; 3pm Sun, Apr 3; The Woodlawn Theatre, 1920 Fredericksburg, (210) 738-1117, Runs through May 1.
