Kehinde Wiley

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2009-01-14

The World Stage: Africa, Lagos ~ Dakar takes up residence in Artpace’s Hudson Showroom beginning January 15, showcasing 10 new paintings by Kehinde Wiley, a New York-based painter whose exuberant yet meticulously stylized portraits of African-Americans, including major hip-hop players, tip their hats to the gestures and postures of Renaissance and high-baroque portraitists — think Ingres, Reynolds, Tiepolo, and Gainsborough. Wiley’s spent the last two years living and working in Africa, and his World Stage series documents contemporary Africans. To experience a walk through the gallery with the man himself, be sure to be at Artpace at 7 p.m. Free, 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, January 15. Artpace, 445 N. Main, (210) 212-4900, artpace.org.
