When: Wednesdays-Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Continues through Dec. 31
A Collaboration with local organization Bridge Projects, Artpace’s latest exhibition is an uplifting one — quite literally. Entitled “Lift,” and running (flying?) through December 31, the whimsical show calls us to reconsider kites, something most adults probably haven’t thought about since childhood. Featuring kites of all types from around the world, made by 28 different artists (including 13 from San Antonio), “Lift” contextualizes the 2,500-year history of the kite and presents them as artistic vehicles. Made of all manner of materials and used for many practical purposes throughout the years, the kite is “an object of utility, reflection, and metaphor; the kite lifts our hearts and minds aloft.” As a medium that “leads our gaze upward” and “demands a consideration of natural forces,” the kite places “artwork in a context beyond the gallery walls, into the atmosphere itself.” Fun, historical, universal and refreshingly uncommon, “Lift” promises to be an exhibit for all to enjoy.
