Because they love you!

It's true. Local bands Fishermen and Please Help! are sweet on you. Thus, in honor of the spirit of love each band has decided (completely separately) to offer a brief taste of their respective upcoming albums, both of which are due out this summer. Dig these sweets quick though, because they're only available until midnight tonight.

Fishermen “Fall”

Content to let the song speak for itself, the Captain of the Fishermen, Edwin Stephens, was straight to the point when I asked about this silky smooth and instantly groovable track (available for download and stream). “This is a sneak preview version of our single “Fall” available only this Valentine’s Day. The song will be the third single off our debut record due out this summer, but the demo version will only be available for early download on Valentine’s Day via our Bandcamp page.” And don't forget to catch Fishermen on February 22 at Sam's Burger Joint.

Please Help! “A Light”

More specifically dedicated to the concept of romantic love, Phillip Luna delivers an exquisite and minimal duet with talented SA folk singer Nicolette Good. This touching song (available for stream only) will be on the upcoming album from Luna's Please Help! Project. For much more about that project and that album, be sure to read next week's Current issue. This song is a heartfelt and masterfully executed expression of bottomless love that really showcases both singers skill and knack for collaboration. What makes this song even better, is what Luna told the Current about its origin.

"I wrote this tune in 2008, and then Nicolette covered it in 2009. It was clear that we needed to do it as a duet for this album. It was my intent in the studio to get a performance that made it conceivable for the listener to believe that Nicolette and I are actually a couple. Or at least, genuinely in love. The reality is that I have a wife of over 20 years and writing songs about my love for her, Blanca Lee Luna, is very very easy and common for me to do.

The song is about the undefinable attraction we have to who we love. Beyond the physical superficiality of flesh, the inner light and the sound of one laugh among all others, the look that is behind someones eyes, beyond the stare looking back into your own, and how the more we explore that light, the further we get from ever turning back. It is eternal and essential. It is more than what makes the world go round."
