"Good evening," he said, sitting in front of an old beat-up piano that sounded like heaven. "We're the Lucas Jack band, and we're from San Antonio."
Technically speaking, Lucas Jack is from Kalamazoo, Michigan and worked as an attorney in Chicago, Illinois. But after recently moving to San Antonio he quickly established himself as one of the most solid singer-songwriters in town. Performing songs from his excellent Sun City, Saturday night at 502 Bar (and as part of a bill that included Tera Ferna, Colleens, slowlikefire and Mabel 1918) Jack and his band (Matt Adler on guitar and vocals, Will Kelly on bass and Mike Gómez on drums) started with album opener "You Belong to the City Now" and went on to give us a powerful Billy Joel-meets-Elton John set of originals that was a well-balanced combination of tender ballads and edgy power pop. It all sounded fresh and, besides his tasteful solos and the undeniable quality of the songs, Jack confirmed to be an amazing singer whose pop sensibility doesn't stop him from rocking the house.
Keep Lucas Jack on your list of artists to watch in 2014: he plans to release an EP in March.
