Max Baca and his band Los Texmaniacs are keeping the conjunto sound alive and well. Baca, perhaps best dubbed a neo-traditionalist, has been mentored by Flaco Jimenez (who quite frequently plays and records with the band) and is well-noted as a true master at his instrument, the traditional Mexican bajo sexto (a 12-string, guitar-like implement).

Like a journey through a diverse selection of old South Texas dancehalls on some bygone Saturday night, a typical live set from the Grammy-winning group includes a little bit of Texas country, a little bit of Tex-Mex rock and roll, a little bit of Tejano, and, of course, the rich conjunto tunes that anchor it all.

Friday, September 22, $3, 8pm, The Squeezebox, 2806 N. St. Mary’s St., facebook.com/thesqueezebox.
