Describing the Big Momma’s House trilogy, which grossed more than $225 million at box offices worldwide, the word “gratuitous” could be used in countless ways, but maybe the most unnecessary aspect of the films is the prosthetic makeup that artists spent up to six hours applying to Martin Lawrence to transform him into the title character. Lawrence’s 1994 theatrically released stand-up special You So Crazy alone is proof Lawrence can embody an entire cast of characters and situations using nothing but a microphone and a stool. The MPAA, for example, thought Lawrence’s portrayal of sexual situations using said mic and stool were enough to warrant the dreaded NC-17 rating. Most comics structure their acts to call back to previous punchlines, Lawrence enacts a dramatic multi-character third-act plot twist inside a vagina. Hollywood special effects would make this a graphic gross-out gag, but when it’s conjured onstage using nothing but words and gestures, it’s closer to a collective hallucination, implicating your own brain in its execution. You so crazy, indeed.
